It is believed that acupressure predates acupuncture and is about 4,000 years old. The Chinese is not the only Asian system that uses acupressure. Ayurveda treatments from India, Japanese and Tibetan medicine use acupressure and acupuncture. However Ayurveda and Tibetan medicine use a different “energetic map” than the Chinese and Japanese, often causing confusion to Westerners. For example, “chakras” are from Ayurveda, and not part of the Chinese/Japanese system at all. The following concepts explained here are from classical Chinese medicine.
