Herbs have long been used to beautify the skin, both for the most royal of queens and the most humble of peasants. Long before the first usage of synthetic ingredients such as white petrolatum in skincare in the late 1800s, women only used ingredients from nature for skin care. While synthetic skinc are ingredients are still used widely today, and new advancements in ingredient technology are discovered every year, there has been a huge resurgence of the use of herbs both in the treatment room, and at home.
The reasons are many, but most simply, herbs are accessible, effective, and inexpensive. They deliver bioavailable vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants into the skin in a way that, for many, is less irritant than their active counterparts. There’s also a wide variety in how they can be used, whether it’s as a simple infusion for a compress, toner, or steam; poultice, mask, or even just healthy refreshment or to brighten the ambience of your space.
There are a multitude of herbs that are known to specifically improve skin health. While some grow in exotic locales, many others grow natively in your own backyard or local park or community garden. If you don’t have a yard, or access to a community space, all you need are some pots and a sunny windowsill to grow your own herbal skin care potions.
