BEAUTY SEEKERS
have been turning to the ground for centuries. Cleopatra kept her skin beautiful with clay masks. Mud and sea salt have been popular around the world for ages. Today, spas are digging up more pieces of the Earth to beautify and cleanse their clients, ranging from quartz sand to bark to creek water and other natural elements.
SOUND & SAND MASSAGE
Auberge Beach Residences & Spa Fort Lauderdale Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 60 minutes, $175Remember when you were little and you’d bury yourself up to your neck in sand at the beach? It made you feel warm, relaxed and cozy. This treatment is just like that. “The owner grew up playing in sand and water and wanted to bring the feel and sound of the ocean into the spa concept,” says Tracy Lee, owner of TLEE Spas, which created Auberge’s spa.
The client is wrapped in a lightweight sheet from the neck down and lies on a massage table filled with quartz sand underneath and a thin layer of the sand on top.
“Quartz is a semi-precious stone that has healing properties,” says Lee.
“It’s said to help keep you centered and strengthens your ability to be a loving person and enhance your ability to enjoy life. The table itself heats the sand and warms the client to the core. It’s profoundly relaxing and meditative.”
For the sound element, the client is given a headset with multi-layered audio signals. “They act together to create a resonance that affects your brain waves and balances out your right and left side of your body,” explains Lee. “It’s scientifically and clinically proven to reduce stress.”
The Sound & Sand Massage treatment not only appeals to earthy and new-age people who are into Earthbased treatments, sound therapy and crystals, but also to athletes in need of deep massage or clients looking for intense stress relief.
