Right off the bat, let’s distinguish holy basil from the western sweet basil used in your favorite pesto sauce. Although this common kitchen basil is a healthy and delicious addition to spa waters and snacks, it is not the same herb as holy basil. Many variations of basil exist across the globe, such as:
Western Sweet Basil
- Commonly used in Italian cooking. Also known as Mediterranean basil
Thai Sweet Basil
- Has a purple stem and dark purple flowers. Can be spicy compared to western basil.
Lemon Basil
- Used to compliment seafood. has pale green leaves or dark green leaves
Cinnamon Basil

Holy Basil
