DESERT DARLING
The Prickly Pear cactus, or Barbary fig, is native only to the Americas, but it has been introduced and farmed in other global regions. A member of the cactus family, the plant grows with flat, rounded arms and spines. This hairlike spikes, called glochids, can easily penetrate skin and protect the plant from desert animals. When looking at this bright, fruited cactus, it is no wonder where it gets its name.
The Prickly Pear cactus presents a berry colored fruit with seeds. The fruit can be eaten and is popular in many countries outside the U.S. From the fruit, however, the seeds hold the most prized skin care properties.
