The term "pro-biotic" was first used in 1965, by scientists Lilly and Stillwell, to describe substances secreted by one organism which stimulate the growth of another (1). In other words, probiotics are a beneficial type of bacteria that promote each other’s growth. For centuries, humans have been consuming probiotics without even realizing it, and this is because throughout history, humans have been dirty. To elaborate on this, humans didn’t believe in bathing frequently and were outdoors quite often, exposed to a much more diverse bacterial culture which exists in nature. These bacteria teach our immune system everything, making it stronger and smarter in protecting us. In addition, there was more dirt on the foods people consumed, and they used to clean everything less frequently.
